For Onn boxes and similar streaming devices, you’ll need to enable Developer Mode and turn off Play Protect.
Step 1: Enable Developer Mode (Onn Box)
- Go to Settings
- Select System
- Click on About
- Scroll down to Android TV OS Build
- Click it 7 times until you see the message:
“You are now a developer.”
Once enabled, a new Developer Options menu will appear under System settings. This allows you to:
- Enable USB debugging
- Adjust animation speeds
- Install third-party apps
Step 2: Turn Off Play Protect
- Open the Google Play Store
- Click your profile icon (top right)
- Select Play Protect
- Tap the Settings (gear icon)
- Toggle OFF “Scan apps with Play Protect.”
- Confirm by selecting “Turn off.”
After completing these steps, your device will be ready for installing apps outside the Play Store.
